Review
This is one of those great records that slipped through the cracks, so I had no idea what it would sound like when I found it, but I knew it would be dope…ANYTHING that the Sylvers put their name on (from 1972-1977) is classic.

This record has a bit of everything on it, as far as sound is concerned. They can’t really sing that great, but they know how to harmonize, and their lyrics make a TON of sense (thanks to writer/producer Leon Sylvers III) and can relate to issues of any generation.

Better Than The Jackson 5. Period. For those who aren’t up on it, go do your homework, buy some early Sylvers records (go back to 1972), then let me know what you think about em. Heads up, their early records are hard to find, but once you come across em, you’ll find that the long search was well worth it.

Don’t Give Up The Good Life

Be My Love

What’s It All About

Wish You Were Here

Design
The “Sylvers III” type treatment seems to be some tweaked italic version of Cooper Black. It’s fun, poppy, and makes a strong statement…like the group. I really like the “The” at the top of the lockup, that was a standard type graphic in the 70′s that I’ve noticed many artists/groups (of that era) using.

A small detail that I like here is the fact that the image gets cut off about halfway down the cover of the LP. That creates a nice tension within the space.

Miracle at St.Anna

I went to see this movie on Friday, and it was an AMAZING film. Don’t read all of the hate reviews out there, Miracle at St.Anna is a MUST SEE!

Looking back, one must appreciate what all of the soldiers of World War II accomplished, and all that they gave. Major shout to the BUFFALO SOLDIERS.

However, I am an anti-war individual…bottom line. So here is an anti-war track…addressing our current military situation.

The Message
Back, dropping another hip hop mix, I’ve just been on my ’90 to ’99 kick lately…

With Selects, again, I’m taking some of my favorite tracks from that golden age of hip hop, and bringing them back to life.

This go-round I slip in a bit more oddities…just to make this mix slightly different from Three.HipHop, overall they’re pretty similar though.

Enjoy.

Review
A genius…the man behind the scenes! Don Blackman! This LP is both his first and last solo album, ie…his ONLY album. He showed all of his talents here, from the writing, to the singing, to the keys, to the arrangements. I’m still not sure why Don Blackman isn’t a household name, his music is something that everyone should make themselves familiar with.

Don played a major part behind the success of many legends, such as Weldon Irvine and Bernard Wright. Writing and producing for many others as well. He also helped define that Jazz, Spacey Funk Boogie of the early eighties amongst some musicians, looking to explore new sounds. A lot of people don’t give Don his respect, but it’s definitely past due.

Design
The cover is extra plain…but he gets BIG respect for pulling off the Rick James look, with those beads and braids with the funky mustache! That’s sooooooooooooooo 80′s! Also be sure to check out that taco meat on his chest…peace!

NARD Still Got It.

Legendary on the keys, Bernard Wright…here’s a clip of the man himself playing a solo with his band (2007), in his current hometown Dallas, Texas (Bernard is originally from Queens, NY). Not only does NARD still got it, but his band sounds great a well. Check it out!
