LAT’10

Front Cover
Cover Art: Max Vogel aka Razauno (More on the artist below the tracklist)

After a loooooong strenuous (yet enjoyable) digging process, I present you with my latest creation, LAT’10. I came up with the title based on two simple components, LATIN + 2010. It’s only right, the music is completely latin (including mpb, bossa nova, samba, salsa, latin jazz, latin funk, latin soul, latin rock, etc), and this mix is going to bring in the new year, 2010…so when you put the two together, you get LAT’10, simple but it works. So push 2009 waaaaaaay behind you (it was probably the wackest year ever!), and kick 2010 off the right way, with good people, good music…and good times! Enjoy…

Cover Art Feature: Max Vogel aka Razauno

The cover art was done by a friend of mine, an AMAZING designer/illustrator/typographer by the name of Max Vogel, also known as Razauno. Not only does he create some of the best art and design work that’s out there, but he’s also a TRUE lover of music, so when he offered to design a cover for the LAT’10 mix, the answer was “YES” without a doubt. I am super pleased with the results by the way!

You can check out his work on his website at razauno.com, he can also be found discussing and sharing cool stuff on his blogs at blog.razauno.com and 12ozprophet.com. Go check him out!

DJ Spinna Studio Tour.

This is a very cool video that I stumbled upon the other day while online. One of my favorite DJ’s and producers DJ Spinna, giving us an inside look at his studio. Here he talks about some of his records, some equipment, and just generally tells us how he feels about music. For anybody that has ever been to a DJ Spinna show, especially in Brooklyn (his home town), he HOLDS IT DOWN, and never disappoints the crowd. Enjoy the vid…

Waxpoetics No.38

Wax Poetics Issue 38

Again, the dopest magazine out there, Waxpoetics, comes through with another killer issue, with “Radio Raheem” gracing the cover (Curtis Mayfield is on the other side of the cover)! You can check the specs on issue No.38 here. Please people, go buy and support this magazine!

A-1 Records.

A-1 Records is one of my favorite record spots to hit in the city, in fact, when I moved to NY, this was the first record store that I went to. I see a few celeb DJ’s and producers in here from time to time, and rightfully so….the selection of records is always on point, the music they spin while you’re in there digging is always on point, and the staff is super cool. I had been waiting for some video footage of this shop to appear online for a while now, finally…here it is. Enjoy…

Flipped v17.0

flipped

The original here, is one of my favorite soul songs from the 70′s, so when I heard this track flipped by one of my favorite producers, I was anxious to hear what he’d do with it. I was NOT let down, the flipped version is almost just as dope as the original. But what really put it over the top for me, was the fact that he chopped up another song from the same LP and distorted the vocals and added them to this as well. That kinda detail makes it even better, especially since the average listener may not even notice it.

Enjoy…

Original:

(this is the second track he sampled from the same LP, pay close attention to where he simply took the vocals and distorted them, he didn’t use the music from this track)

ECLECTIC CLASH

Eclectic Clash Cover

SoulBounce.com is one of my favorite music sites on the web, PERIOD. So when they reached out to me to be a part of their “Mixologists” series, I responded to them with an instant “YES!”. So I created a mix especially for them and the thousands of viewers that follow their amazing site. The music is comprised of r&b soul, nu-soul, brazilian house, deep soulful house, and some electronic grooves as well. I hope they enjoyed it, I hope YOU enjoy it…

Runaway.

Georgia Anne Muldrow blesses us once again with her creativity, in the video for her single “Runaway”. I am THOROUGHLY impressed with this effort, especially since the masses aren’t hip to her, so she could be lazy and produce any wack video (like a lot of artists in the top 40 produce). Anyway, this video is VERY reminiscent of 70′s Saturday morning cartoons, like the original Fat Albert cartoon, the Jackson 5 cartoon, the Harlem Globetrotters cartoon, etc. Her attempt to recreate that feeling, that vibe…is beyond successful. Enjoy…

Review
Brazilian singer Ed Motta was waaaaaaaaaay ahead of his time! This is his third record, Entre e Ouça…and probably my favorite from him. Pay close attention to the date that this was released, 1992, it sounds like music that was released last week! His style is a mix of MPB (Música Popular Brasileira), jazz, soul, and funk, but Motta has an amazing voice with really good range, and hardcore soul leaking from his vocal chords. He is the nephew of the legendary Tim Maia, so its no wonder his voice has such a strong presence. But as far as the record is concerned, amazing arrangements, a great jazz lounge vibe, interesting synthetic sounds, some scatting, and really nice chord progressions. This is an artist that I recommend everyone checking out, but for now, listen to the clips below. I STILL don’t accept the fact that this was created in 1992, the music was so ahead of a lot of music created that year. Enjoy…

Noir em Tons Pastéis

Design
This cover wins, simply on intrigue. That’s how I decided to check this album out in the first place, the cover drew me in. The damp mood, the funky but straight-forward illustration, the brightly lit rooms in the house, the car passing by. Entre e Ouça translates to Enter and Hear, and this cover makes me want to do JUST that.

The simple, sort of cartoony type treatment is interesting as well, oddly enough I feel like it gives a sense of motion to the scene going on in the background. It’s so flat, and that yellow bar grounds the whole top third of the album cover…for some reason it just works. One of my favorite covers…
